All foreign nationals (except Indian passport holders) require a visa to enter Nepal. Visas are obtainable from embassies abroad, and on arrival at Kathmandu’s Airport.

Getting a visa at the airport can sometimes take time due to long queues. There have been instances when travelers are asked to show proof of exit from the country, ie flight tickets. You may also need to provide two passport photos and the following fees in US dollars.

The standard voltage of electricity in Nepal is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. The power plugs and sockets used in Nepal are of type C, D and M.

Can I Drink from Tap water?

Tap water in Nepal is not adequate for drinking. We recommend to drink from bottled water, other options can be boiled water or purified water by adding purification tablets.

Is Nepal a safe country?

The short answer – Yes! Locals are always hospitable and very welcoming.

However, we strongly recommend to leave your valuable jewellery at home – you won’t need it while travelling. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage and duffle bags.

In City; please use your own good judgment when selecting an activity in your free time. Although the cities visited on our trips are generally safe during the day, there can be risks to wandering throughout any major city at night. It is our recommendation to stay in small groups and to take taxis to and from restaurants, or during night time excursions

Should I bring cash or use my credit card in Nepal?

ATMs are available throughout Nepal and their accessibility has been expanding gradually even in rural areas. There are numerous ATM kiosks in Pokhara and Kathmandu that have regularly working machines and accepts majority of the international cards. But in trekking trails it is rarely to find ATMs. Credit cards are generally accepted in tourist shops and some restaurants.  Smaller venues take cash only.

If you plan to rely on cash, please bring foreign currency (Euro, Pound, USD) while the easiest foreign currency to exchange for local currency is $US. However please note that mostly any US notes that are older than year 2006 are not accepted. Money exchange bureaus usually offer the best exchange rates, and larger bills like $50, $100 gets better exchange rate.

Is tipping customary in Nepal?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Nepal, but it’s considered polite to leave service workers in restaurants and cafes a 10% tip if a service charge hasn’t already been included in the bill.
During tours and hikes we recommend that any tips are given to the intended recipient by a member of your group, rather than collected and passed on by the group leader.
The amount you tip is entirely a personal preference; however, he following amounts are our recommendations based on our previous travels:
• Trekking guide: US$4-5 per person, per day.
• Activity/Local/assistant guides: US$2-3 per person, per day for local guides.
• Drivers: US$2-3 per person per day.
• Hotel porters: NPR50-100 for assisting you with bags to your room
• Trekking porters: US$3-5 per person per day
Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

What is the dress code while travelling to Nepal?

Since Nepal is a country with a reserved sense of dressing, we highly suggest you to wear something modest and regular while traveling to Nepal. Here, the term modest for clothing signifies something that is not too revealing, especially for women, and covers your upper arms, shoulders, chest, abdomen and upper leg areas. Normal shirts, jeans, long skirts, jackets, and cotton or yoga pants are the best you could wear while traveling to Nepal. Forget wearing singlet or a spaghetti-strap top, and short shorts while traveling to Nepal and when you are in a public place.
